MS.Ed in English

The Master of Science in Education program is jointly administered by the departments of Secondary Education and Youth Services Department (SEYS) and English. The degree provides training in writing pedagogy and curriculum development, offering students the opportunity to discover emerging areas of literary study and develop new approaches to the reading and teaching of texts.

Students pursuing the joint degree complete a total of 33 credits: 18 credits in English Education and 15 credits in English.

English Requirements
  • A course in the teaching of literature or the teaching of writing (3 credits)
    Students choose either English 702, Graduate Methodology for English/Education or English 703, Composition Theory and Literacy Studies.
  • Two elective courses with pre-1900 content (6 credits)
    Students choose from a rotating roster of 600- and 700- level graduate English courses. Recent pre-1900 electives have included: “Performing Conjugality: The Medieval Heterosexual Marriage Debate”; “Shakespeare’s Language”; “Early Modern Utopian Fiction”; “Reading Jane Austen”; “Nineteenth-Century British Children’s Literature”; “Specters of the Black Atlantic: Antebellum African American Literature.”
  • One open elective course (3 credits)
    Students choose from a rotating roster of 600- and 700- level graduate English courses. Recent elective courses have included: “Transnational Origins and Influences of American Poetry”; “Laughing Matters: Asian American Comedy and Humor”: “The Underside of Paradise: Caribbean Cultural Theory and Literature”; “World Literature.”
  • English 781: Special Studies seminar (3 credits)
    Recent sections of English 781 have included: “Film Adaptation”; “The Graphic Novel”; “Science Fiction”; “Consciousness and Literary Experiment”; “Transgender Narratives”; “Representing Eco-Activism in Fiction and Film.”

Students pursuing the MS.Ed in English have two advisors, one in the Division of Education and one in the Department of English; both advisors must be consulted before registering in the program. The Education advisor should be consulted first.

Requirements for Matriculation

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree with a major in English (or the equivalent of 36 undergraduate credits in a field or fields of literary study) and with a cumulative and department average of 3.0. They must also have completed: one year of college-level study, or its equivalent, in a language other than English; and an undergraduate education sequence, including student teaching or its equivalent. MAT in English

The Masters of Arts in Teaching is a new English Education Program of initial and professional certification combined in a 42-credit master’s program. After completing a 24-credit course sequence for initial certification, students take a further 18 credits: 9 in English and 9 in SEYS.
