May 11th – The Place of the Digital Humanities in the Public University

Join us on May 11th for a conference on the digital humanities, organized by our own Professor Kevin Ferguson!

The public university is in a pivotal moment today: on the one hand presidential candidates are debating how to make community college accessible to more students, while on the other hand state budgets in Wisconsin, Louisiana, and New York represent a disinvestment in higher education. Unfairly associated with an empirical, data-driven approach, the digital humanities are often positioned as a solution to problems of online learning, assessment, and student retention. But  what educational roles might the digitial humanities play in the public university? What kinds of unique scholarship and learning can they promote? Do the digital humanities have an intrinsic social mission that aligns with the aims and values of CUNY? How might the digital humanities resist its deployment as a cost-saving budget measure and instead promote scholarly values central to our college’s mission?
