At the undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and master’s levels, English Department faculty help prospective teachers establish a solid content-knowledge base, as well as to acquire the critical awareness, pedagogical practices, and professional disposition necessary to become effective teachers and critically reflective practitioners.
Information for Undergraduates
Undergraduate Major in English Education (BA)
This program is designed for current English majors at Queens College who are interested in becoming initially certified as secondary English teachers in New York State.
(Prerequisites and details)
The Undergraduate Major in English Education is 41CR (English) and 27CR (SEYS)
Undergraduates wishing to enter the English Education major (ENGL 7-12 BA) must:
- FIRST declare as an English major and attain at least 15CR within the major
- Maintain an English GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Then, redeclare as ENGL 7-12 and begin SEYS content courses
- ENGL 170W (Introduction to Literary Study, 4CR)
- ENGL 241 (The Text in its Historical Moment, 4CR)
- Either ENGL 242 (Literary History, 4CR) or ENGL 243 (Genre, 4CR)
- And a 200-level Writing course (3CR)
The English courses taken for ENGL 7-12 majors are exactly the same as those taken for the English major, with one slight exception: we highly recommend that students take ENGL 202W, Rhetoric and Writing in English Education, ideally in the same semester that they begin their SEYS courses (if offered). This course is not required, but it helps enormously with students’ initial accreditation.
Keep in mind that your final year of the program will largely be spent in the classroom, so scheduling coursework at Queens College can become a bit more challenging. It is highly recommended that you complete as much of your English coursework as possible before proceeding through the degree.
